Nelson is best known for his 14-year career as a linebacker with the New England Patriots. A three-time All Pro selection, Nelson was inducted into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame in 1993 and is one of only seven patriots players to have his jersey # retired.

Throughout his professional playing career, he missed only three games, and ranks sixth all-time in games played for the New England Patriots.

Nelson is the former athletic director and head football coach at Curry College, where he holds the record of being the winningest coach in Curry College history.
